Later, he became a sub-contractor for Toyota and expanded his business to manufacturing other engine parts. After the Second World War, Honda established the Honda Technical Research Institute in Hamamatsu, Japan, which became the Honda Motor Company, Ltd. two years later.
Honda, as a vehicle manufacturer, started out with manufacturing scooters and motorcycles�immediate and affordable modes of transportation for then war torn Japan. In 1959, Honda started importing their scooters and motorcycles in the US with the opening of the American Honda Motor Co., Inc. in Los Angeles. It was only in the 1960s when Honda started manufacturing passenger cars and the first few bunch of cars were intended mostly for the Japanese market.
